Don't Count Casey James Out

Sometime last year a Texas blues player drove his mom’s truck up to Denver to audition for American Idol. As loyal viewers of the show know, before a contestant even gets in front of the judges they have to make it past an initial screening. We haven’t seen what Casey James did to impress the producers to make it to the judges’ round, but we can guess that they saw what his many fans have seen over the past few months – a gifted singer-songwriter-musician who lives for music.

Casey made a memorable impression on many levels during that first televised performance – he had a good voice, he was cute, and handled awkward situations with equanimity. But what was most clear was this was a dedicated musician who just wanted the chance to show what he could do. When Casey got to Hollywood, he did just that. He brought out his not-so-secret weapon, his guitar, and played and sang “I Don’t Need No Doctor” like he’d been doing it all his life. It was instantly clear this was a talented artist, not a wannabe musician who was trying to take a shortcut to fame.

Casey had no way of knowing what the whirlwind of American Idol would do to him. He is now known to millions, yet it’s not clear that the casual viewer really knows him at all. This became eminently clear as the first videos from this past weekend’s series of hometown visits started being displayed.

We’ve now been shown a side of Casey that only his fans from back home had seen before. He sang with abandon, he played guitar with gusto, he charmed the crowd, he reveled in jamming with his band, he sang a beautiful duet with his mom. Unlike the sometimes stiff, sometimes reserved Casey that we see on the Idol stage, he was fully in command of every performances. He was comfortable, he was dynamic, he was expressive, and he looked to be about the happiest guy on the face of the earth. Playing music to him seems as important as breathing air to the rest of us.

And this voice, sometimes so subdued on the show, came out of nowhere. He had a husky growl and a sweet falsetto; he had smooth sustained notes and a sexy vibrato. The voice was mostly bluesy, with a little country thrown in. He played an original song which, as they often say on Idol, could be a hit on the radio right now.

We knew Casey could sing, we’d heard him play around with his voice before, making it do so many different things on so many different songs. But set free from the time constraints – and maybe feeling the love of the home crowd – he was able to give some truly remarkable performances. And he was able to do what he appears to love the most – jam. He can play guitar better than anyone who’s ever taken the Idol stage, without question. He might be one of the best guitarists out there, period.

The contrast between the adored Casey back home in Texas and the underdog Casey in California was striking. This weekend, he was a star -- clearly destined to be the next American Idol. Yet back in Los Angeles, Ellen and Randy have already written him off. So focused on their dream final of the two Midwesterners they don’t even mention Casey’s name in their interviews. Ryan, the good little soldier, was recently heard counting him out as well. But an interesting phenomenon is happening. The more people listen to Casey, without the American Idol filter to tell them what they think, the more the like him. Slowly, Idol watchers are seeing him as the dark horse that just might win the race.

They listened back to “Mrs. Robinson” and realized it might have been the best vocal of the year by any contestant, or at worst second only to his performance of “Don’t.” They realize that he wasn’t adequately praised for “You’ll Think of Me” and his ability to change up and rock out on “Lawdy Miss Clawdy” was overlooked as well. They realize that no one has had as affecting a moment on stage this year as “Jealous Guy,” and that he can do all this while being a veritable virtuoso on the guitar. And maybe most importantly, they’ve checked out the many YouTube videos from this past weekend and discovered what a star he already is.

This competition is not over, despite what the judges might think. It’s not in the judges’ hands, it is in ours. The journey that began on the road from Ft. Worth to Denver can still end under the confetti next week in Hollywood.

  1. I think I love you!!! Seriously, this is the 3rd blog in a row where you have spoken for me. I flew from Florida to be at Casey's homecoming, what an experience. I was at the Keys and didn't want to leave. What he brought home was awesome!!! That is why we are getting the youtube videos out there. We want everyone to see who the real Casey James is. So the judges gave him a ballad that he'll be able to pull off and they'll just dismiss. I hope and pray that for his choice he chooses one of the tunes from his Keys performance and just shows all of America who he really is. If he just does what he does best on Tuesday night, he'll either have America dialing their fingers off, or he'll go out in a blaze of glory!!!!

  2. I love this article! If this is a singing contest and the right thing happens and politics are left out of the game, Casey James will win the American Idol crown! Let's pray that the right thing happens and above all remember to Vote, Vote, Vote, Vote, for Casey James.

  6. Mickey I don't want to sound like I'm copying you, but DITTO! I am hoping and praying with all my might that enough people see these videos before tomorrow night and base there votes on it! The real Casey has NOT been shown on AI, thanks to the Judges lame song lists (which I believe are somewhat intentional to hold him back) and America has a right to know!
Thank you for your, continual, spot on blogs! You are the greatest!!!

  7. Once again you nailed it! Casey James' talent - the likes of which a generation rarely sees - is hard to pigeonhole. And there aren't enough adjectives to go around; without repeating over and over how masterfully he performs. I only hope if he does win that he's never beholding to the powers that be regarding what he records. That would be a bigger crime than him losing his rightful title.

  8. You are my hero too. What a comprehensive and astute wrap up of that amazing weekend.. I was taken on a ride of my life watching all the home footage of Casey's two day concert tour. amazed lifted up and rocked and pained (if your not in pain it aint the blues) I also revelled in his falsetto, his grungy blues notes his hair slinging his ever present smile... Lets keep that boy around for awhile...

  10. Talk about a ROCK STAR! AI or not, he is going to be one of the biggest names ever launched on AI. The other two contestants are good, but he will pass them up in a heartbeat. He has an amazing presence and seems to be the real deal. A sleeping giant has just awakened.

  11. Thank You!!! An excellent blog!!! I agree...we have to get these videos seen by as many people as possible so they can see who the Real Casey is!! His performances at the Key's were so moving and emotional for me, I almost broke down several times...because I knew I was witnessing a Star being born right in front of me!!! I hope he will be able to shine this week with his own choice song, but I'm afraid his choice is actually on a page of songs he has to choose from. Thats not his choice...it's theirs...if he could choose, then America would see what we all saw last weekend!! He could do "King's Highway"...in which he is so 'into' the zone he actually plays his guitar with one hand and then slaps it 3 times on the neck in perfect key....how did he do that?? that is what I call....TALENT!!! Keep up the great blogs!!!

  12. What a great article. I've been watching American Idol and haven't understood why the rest of America hasn't seen this truly gifted singer, musician and songwriter. I'm not a big fan of the judges on AI so I've written of what they say as pure politics. When they see Casey James perform I'm sure the judges are thinking "I wish I had this kind of talent along with the great attitude and looks. Casey James will have a great career despite the show. I'm glad you commented on how happy he looked and I agree he looked like the happiest guy on the face of the earth. I'll be happy once that first CD is released. Go Casey.

  13. I think they know how good he is but they want Crystal to win. They are afraid Casey will beat her so they want Lee in the final 2 and Crystal has it to win. Lee can not beat Crystal. I want Casey and Crystal in the final 2 and it does not matter then. Like Adam and Kris said last year they both are winners. Well that would make Crystal and Casey both winners.

  14. Wow, it's like you are one of us, the old Thursday Night Jam Gang at Possum Kingdom Lake where Casey first hit stage many years ago! The abondon, the gusto, comfortable & dynamic were all there way back then! Week after week we've watched, hoping Casey would bust loose like the old days. It wasn't until the Hometown Visit that we witnessed Casey in true form; what a treat it was for everyone! Whatever happens over the next couple days, know that for Casey James the audience does make all the difference.

  15. Thanks for saying nice things to Casey. I tired of the harsh words of those judges to Casey. All the beating is for Casey and all the praising is for the other two. If I'm Casey, whether I want to leave it that way or not it hurt so much as though Casey has no talent at all but still standing there because many voted for him because of his looks- which isn't true. Fans voted Casey because he is talented and maltreated in the show. But don't worry Casey your fans will keep you up to the Finale. POWER VOTING to help Casey. No one will help him against those judges except your votes. YOUR VOTES WILL DOMINATE AND WILL KEEP CASEY UP TO FINALE.

  16. I have watched Idol since the beginning and I have never been moved enough by a performer to even want to vote until this year. Casey James is the real deal. His home town videos only confirmed what I had suspected all along. The judges and idol set him up to fail but his fateful following has kept him in it. He will be huge when all of this is over. Heck he already is.

  17. Anyone who is familiar with the kind of talent that is out there can see this guys just a bit of a poser. A second rate rocker with a 'doo'. Not that he's bad, but he just ain't that good. There are so many better singers out there. IMHO.
